Social media is constantly changing. To complicate things even more, one strategy doesn’t apply to all brands. One brand, in particular, was experiencing a steady decline in reach. Over the course of a two-month period, despite hosting a LIVE event, keeping up on reels, and daily posts during peak hours — the numbers continued to drop! Something needed to change quickly.

What worked for other clients was not having the same effect on this particular brand. I decided to review everything from top to bottom. A complete overhaul in strategy to try and turn these insights around.

I knew I wanted to continue to coordinate Live events and keep up on reel content along with daily posts. Maintaining interactions with stories and utilizing niched hashtags were also essential parts of our brand strategy. The solution was hidden inside the strategy’s finer details. What Worked?

I decided to ignore the 8-12 hashtag rule and revert back to a 30-max hashtag strategy. One post wasn’t working, therefore, I initiated a targeted “growth spurt” which ensured that the account was getting multiple posts per day with an increased hashtag quantity.

Years ago, social media managers would swear by utilizing all 30 hashtags that were permissible on Instagram. It was the ONLY way to grow or reach your audience. Then in the last 1-2 years, a shift happened. The algorithm was getting overwhelmed by all the hashtags. So we adapted. Niched down our hashtags, and in most cases, that worked. Every brand is different, and I don’t recommend 30 hashtags for everyone. In this case, it proves to work.
